October 26th - The Housekeeper and the Professor

Join us on October 26th to discuss “The Housekeeper and the Professor” by Yoko Ogama, a novel about a brilliant math professor suffering from short-term memory problems following a traumatic head injury and the young housekeeper, the mother of a ten-year-old son, hired to care for him.

Welcome to Upton Library Book Group!

We are a group of readers that meet once a month to share our thoughts and reviews of a monthly title.

Attendance at meetings is typically 5-10 people, all members of the community are welcome.

Our discussions are very informal, we start the meetings with each member giving a quick first impression of the book, and then engage in free-flowing conversation. Members are welcome to bring discussion questions, but we don't follow any formal structure.

We select titles once a year by vote of the members at our September or November meeting.

We read a wide variety of titles, and its okay to come to the meeting if you didn't like the book, or if you didn't finish reading it, we still want to hear your thoughts!

Book Group History

Upton Library Book Group was formed in 1997 by Library Director Deborah Hersh. Attendance quickly grew, and the group has been meeting monthly ever since.

In 1999, the Nov/Dec meeting was combined and held on the first Wednesday in December to avoid the holiday rush.

In 2000, the group adopted our current tradition of alternating fiction and non-fiction titles, with April reserved for a book of poetry.

In 2005, the position of Facilitator was taken over by Dacia Reid, one of our Library Trustees.

In 2006, the members decided to no longer reserve April for a poetry selection.

In May 2011, the position of Facilitator was taken over by Matthew Bachtold, Library Director, and the meeting time was changed to 8pm-9pm.
